But as the waves travel inland, they build up to higher and higher heights as the depth of the ocean decreases.The tidal wave has particularly affected the coastal districts of Jaffna, Mullativu, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Ampara, Hambantota, Matara and Galle. areas in the North and East of the country had already been affected by serious monsoon floods in previous months leading to displacement and infrastructure damage.In sri lanka 35,000 people were killed, while 18,000 died in India and 8,000 died in Thailand.
